Hakuho held a press conference yesterday morning in conjunction with the new banzuke. The topic of conversation of course centered on his pending promotion to Yokozuna. "There is pressure, and I already know it will be difficult, so I'll just try my best. I was worn out last basho trying to become number one. It's a lot different than shooting for the Ozeki rank." Hakuho admitted that he was shocked at the end of last basho that he didn't receive the promotion, but he returned home to Mongolia to regroup. "A friend told me that my performance was worthy of a Yokozuna so I should just fight like one. That lifted a burden off of my shoulders." When asked about tingling sensation in his right hand that bothered him during the summer exhibitions, he commented, "It feels much better. I'm sure I'm okay." Hakuho concluded, "I won 13 last basho, and I will continue to give it my all."

[font=Verdana] Day6 Bonus Quotes

A recording breaking day deserves an encore of quotes.

The Yokozuna is PO'd

As the culmination of a day when all the yokozuna and ozeki bit the dohyo dust, Asashoryu was surprised by an aggressive Kisenosato and pushed out of the ring unceremoniously even before he had a chance to brace himself.

Rubbing his right shin, which got all swollen and discolored when he banged it against the side of the dohyo as he fell, he said bitterly, "He got all the way inside--chest to chest? How else would I lose to that guy? Hey, I lost. I LOST!"

He did give some credit to the young rikishi, "For a youngster, he did some mighty fine sumo." But, that was about it. He added forebodingly, "Well, there is always the jungyo. I better do some keiko with him." Everyone knows what that means. A series of sanban-geiko with the upstart and a few lessons on how to execute the tsuri-otoshi.

As reported earlier, Ryu got goosebumps when he saw Hakuho lose before him. "Everyone lost, huh?" he spat out. "Kuso! There was a really bad aura out there."

He then went to the infirmary and had his leg looked at. Told it was just a contusion, he emerged after some icing and spoke to the waiting press, "It looks like I'll be able to do sumo tomorrow. Hey, while you're at it, why don't you guys pray for me."

* * * * *

Hakuho Isn't Ready

Rattled by a game Aminishiki who battled him blow to blow in a tsuppari exchange, Hakuho showed his inexperience by getting impatient and forcing the issue. His abortive try at a kotenage allowed Ami to hook his leg behind him for a nifty sotogake trip. It was a dejected Hakuho that walked the hanmichi back to the dressing room.

What about his promotion chances now? "Well, he got himself into a situation where he can't lose anymore," said Kitanoumi Rijicho. "There is the matter of his image [as a top rikishi]."

Hakuho sat glumly and said, "C'est la vie. What can I do?" His eyes, which he had averted from the press corp, were all red. It appeared as if he would burst out crying at any moment. "All the ozeki lost. What the heck is happening." When asked if he could turn things around, he replied softly, "I hope so."

* * * * *

I am Hurting

As bad as Ryu and Ho felt, Kaio was feeling worse. Losing abjectly once more, he finally decided to pull out of the tournament. According to his oyakata, Kaio had told him, "My lower back is bothering me."

Kyujo means he will be kadoban for a record tenth time in Kyshu. Tomozuna Oyakata said very directly, "He will place his future on the line at the Kyushu Basho." There is no consideration of his remaining active if he were to be demoted from the ozeki rank.

* * * * *

I Want to be the Kind of Rikishi Everyone Would Love!

Meanwhile, the Little Rikishi That Could, Ama, is now alone at the top with his his undefeated record.
"Gee, it sure feels good," he said with a big grin. "I'm so relaxed that I can do my sumo as if I were at the keiko-ba."

What's the secret? A good night's sleep. "I did go out drinking last night," he cheerfully confessed. "But normally, I am in bed by 8 o'clock."

There is another reason. The littlest guy in makuuchi has put on some weight. "Dinner is tougher than keiko," complained Ama. When he returns from the Kokugikan, Ajigawa Oyakata is waiting for him at the dinner table.

"He tells me to eat this and eat that," Ama said. "When I am by myself, I eat about half a donburi, but [with him there] I would eat three bowls. However, I really appreciate having dinner with him. It is a great honor."

* * * * *

I Must be Dreaming!

We all know by now, little Princess Aiko went to Kokugikan for the first time on Shonichi. She was observed happily following the events on the dohyo and keeping score in her program. What did she have to say about her experience? Here what a palace official told the press:

As soon as she sat down in the VIP box, she exclaimed to he parents, "There is so-and-so." She knew who the rikishi were on the dohyo without being told. As the matches progressed, the adults in the box helped her decipher some of the kanji of the rikishi shikona.

She was impressed by the yumitori-shiki, "It was really beautiful." She also told everyone, "Gee, that was really fun." Even after she returned to the palace and was having her dinner, she would say to whomever was around, "Did I really go to the Kokugikan? Was I just dreaming?"
